8 Tips For New Bloggers

It’s been 8 months since I first started blogging. I’m not a pro-blogger, but still I have come up with a few tips that I think will be found useful by the new bloggers. This is my first attempt in giving out tips. :) And that also with a bunch of links from some of my favorite blogs.

1. Own Domain: Your domain should be small (10-12 characters are enough) one and easy-to-remember. For more tips on choosing domain names, read Shaun’s article.

2. Good Host: If you have a self-hosted blog, then host it on a reliable host. Make sure your is a reliable one, has no downtimes and has 24/7 support. (If anyone has written a good article on importance of good web-hosting, please let me know below. I’ll add the link here.)

3. Nice Theme: You should have a nice, clear and simple template. Don’t make it full of images, because that will increase the loading time of your blog. Remember, your theme gives the first impression of your blog. Read Nirmal’s post for more info. on selecting a theme.

4. Feed Button: Place the feed link/icon in the first fold of your blog. The feed icon should not be too big or too small. Use a medium sized icon depending on your blog layout. For more tips, visit Shankar’s place.

5. Comment on other blogs: Well, yes. This is important! Or you, yourself, won’t get any comments on your blog. So, this is a must. When I started out blogging, I used to be very lazy in commenting on other blogs, but the result was that I hardly got a comment the whole week. Read more tips by Brown.

6. Reply to comments: It’s good to respond all the comments given on your posts. Your blog looks more active this way. Don’t ever piss of your readers. If you do want to do, read some tips to piss of readers by Shaun and read another good article on how to increase comments on your blogs by Nirmal.

7. Participate in discussions: Participate in discussions on other blogs.Participation doesn’t mean you start spamming. Make a comment related to the topic. This will help your blog gain some exposure.

8. Join Link Directories: Join as many link directories as you can. It gets you link backs, and link backs help you get a higher PageRank.

As this is my first attempt in giving out tips, I’m sure there will be many points I’ll be missing. Feel free to point out my mistakes, or add more tips below. I’d appreciate them all.

Faster Gmail For Slow Connection Users

If you haven’t noticed, Gmail has rolled out new improvements today, to their Loading interface while signing in for Gmail. It now has a new loading screen with a loading bar that shows the progress of how much Gmail has been loaded and an option to load your Inbox in basic HTML.

Dial-up users or slow connection users can click the link Load Basic HTML while Gmail loads and it will open much faster than before. You won’t the usual Ajax-powered Gmail, but still, you can at least check your mails if you are in a hurry.

Gmail’s loading times have also been reduced to a great extent. Previously, Gmail required 24 requests to load the Inbox, but now it has been reduced to only 4 requests. [Via BlogsDNA]

Here’s what Gmail team has to say:

We’ll keep working to make Gmail faster — there’s a lot we’re doing right now — and we’ll give periodic updates as we get improvements out. (And hopefully you’ll notice some of them too.)

You can also reduce the loading time by appending the nocheckbrowser parameter to the URL [via Digital Inspiration]. This will force Gmail to skip the browser check. You can use the following URL for this purpose:

http://mail.google.com/gmail?nocheckbrowser

Fix For Restart Bug In Windows XP SP3

If you’re an AMD processor users, you must have been greeted by the Blue Screen of Death, after installing Windows XP SP3 on rebooting their computer. The error begins with something like this: STOP: 0×0000007E (0xC0000005 and contains the error text SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED. And after this, the computers reboots again and keeps repeating this.

Windows XP SP3 apparently copies an Intel power management driver to the computer that was not there before the installation of SP3 and that is said to be the cause for the restart bug. But thanks to HP, a fix has been given for this bug.

The following fix can only be used if you use a non-Intel processor and encounter the restart bug after installing Windows XP Service Pack 3. Below are the fixes given by HP and Microsoft:

Remember: Make sure you make a quick backup of your system using System Restore. And also backup your Registry entries.

HP’s Fix For XP SP3 Restart Bug:

* Boot Computer in Safe Mode
* Use Windows Explorer to browse to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers
* Right-click intelppm.sys and rename it to XXXintelppm.syx
* Restart Windows

If the computer is unable to boot into safe mode do the following:

* Press F8 during startup and load the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
* Type the number that corresponds to your Windows installation
* Log in as an administrator
* Type cd c:\windows\system32\drivers at the command prompt
* Type rename intelppm.sys XXXintelppm.syx
* Restart Windows

Microsoft’s Fix For XP SP3 Restart Bug:

* Boot the Computer into Safe Mode
* Press Windows R, type regedit, hit enter
* Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\Intelppm
* right-click the Start entry in the right pane and select modify
* Enter 4 in the Value Data box
* Close regedit, restart the computer.

I hope this fixes your restart problem in Windows XP after installing to SP3.

Hide Your Files In A JPEG

Well, did you know you could hide your files in a JPEG file? For this, you will only need to download WinRAR. You just need to have a little knowledge about Command Prompt and have WinRAR installed.

Ok, lets begin…

1. Gather all the files that you wish to hide in a folder anywhere in your PC (make it in C:\hidden - RECOMMENDED).
2. Now, add those files in a RAR archive (e.g. secret.rar). This file should also be in the same directory (C:\hidden).
3. Now, look for a simple JPEG picture file (e.g. logo.jpg). Copy/Paste that file also in C:\hidden.
4. Now, open Command Prompt (Go to Run and type ‘cmd‘). Make your working directory C:\hidden.

5. Now type: “COPY /b logo.jpg + secret.rar output.jpg” (without quotes) - Now, logo.jpg is the picture you want to show, secret.rar is the file to be hidden, and output.jpg is the file which contains both. :D
6. Now, after you have done this, you will see a file output.jpg in C:\hidden. Open it (double-click) and it will show the picture you wanted to show. Now try opening the same file with WinRAR, it will show the hidden archive :).

Done! :D

You can also upload the image (output.jpg) on image host and share it with others :D.

FeedDemon 2.7 Released

Newsgator gas released a new version of FeedDemon, the best RSS reader for Windows. FeedDemon 2.7 includes several bug fixes, many new features and tons of performance improvements.

The most notable newly added feature is the “Find Feeds“. Now you can subscribe to multiple feeds related to your query at the same time. And best of all, FeedDemon is still free!

Download FeedDemon 2.7

For some reason, the FeedDemon home page still says FeedDemon 2.6, but if you download it, the installer is actually for FeedDemon 2.7.

How To Batch Download From YouTube

Can this get any better for YouTube addicts? Now you can download multiple videos from YouTube at once and while downloading, you can even convert them to any format. This application can download videos from any YouTube page, or from individual channels, playlists, favourites, users and group pages.

This batch downloader works only on pages with more than one YouTube video. But remember, it won’t work on the Search page. May be we’ll get this feature in the future releases, but at the moment, it doesn’t work. The Download button activates on selected pages only.

YouTube Batch Downloader

How To Batch Download YouTube Videos

In order to download videos using YouTube Batch Downloader, open the page contaning videos or video links, and press the Downlaod button. Your videoes will start downloading instantly.

Where Are the Videos Saved

Wondering, where did all the downloaded videos go? No, they didn’t got lost. You can find them at My Documents\My YouTube folder. They are sorted by YouTube publisher usernames.

No Pause Or Stop Feature

The only thing I didn’t like about this tool is that it does not have button, or option to stop or pause downloading videos. There is no way this can be done unless you close the application itself.

Firefox 3

Firefox 3 logoFinally, the development on the Firefox 3 browser is starting to wrap up. By the end of May, Firefox 3 will enter into the Release Candidate stage. And it’s expected that the long-awaited browser will hit the market in June. It was on their forums that Firefox 3 is targeted towards June.

Firefox 3 is expected to be one top-notch browser, because the pre-release versions have been tested out by about 1.2 million users! I’ve tried out all the Firefox 3 pre-releases, even before it got into Alpha stage, and have seen the remarkable performance improvements in it.

You won’t find any extraordinary or notable new features, but the performance enhancements are awesome! The memory usage Firefox 3 beats out most of the main steam browsers, including Firefox 2! I’m glad Mozilla didn’t compromise on performance just for the sake of a few new features.

We’ll start getting the Release Candidate versions from late May. According to the Mozilla Developer blog:

If no new showstopper issues are found in RC1 it will become Firefox 3 final. If we find any critical issues we will continue to release new Release Candidates until we are ready for final ship.

I still have a feeling that hey won’t be able to do it in one Release Candidate release. I mean, if we look at the release history of Firefox 2 and 3 (below), I’m sure Firefox 3 will have at least 2 Release Candidate releases before the final product.

Firefox 2

  • Alphas: 3
  • Betas: 2
  • Release Candidates: 3

Firefox 3

  • Alphas: 8
  • Betas: 5

Well, that’s it from the Mozilla team. This time they’ve focused more on performance enhancements than adding new features. I was hoping to see a new theme. But.. Nevermind. Better luck next time! ;)

Extensions That Power My Firefox

firefox3

I always want to share my experience with different things. This time, it’s about different extensions I use with my Firefox. First, let’s take a look what Firefox is.

Firefox is the next generation browser which is more faster, secure and fully customizable to surf the web. As of October 2007, Firefox has 14.85% of the world’s market share in Web Browsers. It comes for Microsoft Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. The current stable version available for download , which was released on 1 November 2007. Download here. That’s enough, I guess… Eh? :D

Firefox Extensions

Using extensions (add-ons) with Firefox can enhance your browsing experience by 200%. I also use many extensions to get the most out of it. Below is a list of extensions I use:

1. Boost for Firefox

boost-facebook

Boost is an extension for Firefox which customize your Facebook experience with custom skins, 30+ special features, selectable options, pop-up notifications, an integrated toolbar, custom album viewers, hidden access and a lot more! Download here.

2. Download Statusbar

download-statusbar

With this little extension, you can view and manage your downloads from a tidy status bar at the bottom, without the download window getting in the way of your web browsing. It auto hides itself when not in use, and you can even pause downloads and resume them in your next session. Get yours from here!

3. FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension)

FEBE

FEBE (Firefox Environment Backup Extension) allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up — It will actually rebuild your extensions individually into installable .xpi files. Now you can easily synchronize your office and home browsers. Download from here.

4. FireFTP

fireftp

FireFTP is a free, secure, cross-platform FTP client for Mozilla Firefox which provides easy and intuitive access to FTP servers. Plus it has some really cool advance features like directory comparison, syncing directories while navigating, SSL encryption, search/filtering, integrity checks, remote editing, drag & drop, file hashing, and much more!

5. Google Browser Sync

google-labs-logo

Google Browser Sync for Firefox is an extension that continuously synchronizes your browser settings – including bookmarks, history, persistent cookies, and saved passwords – across your computers. It also allows you to restore open tabs and windows across different machines and browser sessions.

6. Google Notebook

google-notebook

With Google Notebook, you can browse, clip, and organize information from across the web in a single online location that’s accessible from any computer. Planning a trip? Researching a product? Just add clippings to your notebook. You won’t ever have to leave your browser window. If you note down every small thing, then this one’s for you. :)

7. Greasemonkey

greasemonkey

Greasemonkey allows you to customize the way a webpage displays using small bits of JavaScript. download

8. Screengrab!

screengrab

Screengrab saves what u can see in the window, the entire page or just a selection, a particular frame. It can save whole pages as images.

9. StumbleUpon Toolbar

stumbleupon-toolbar

Channel surf the internet with the StumbleUpon toolbar to find great websites, videos, photos and more based on your interests. StumbleUpon learns what you like and makes better recommendations. With StumbleUpon you can also connect with friends and share your discoveries, meet people that have similar interests, and check out what other people are discovering.

10. User Agent Switcher

user-agent-switcher

User Agent Switcher adds a menu and a toolbar button to switch the user agent of the browser. You can have multiple user agents and select which one to use with the help of the menu. No need to manually change the user agent :) I basically installed this to bypass the MegaUpload slot limit, but the trick doesn’t work anymore. lol

11. WML Browser

wmlbrowser

WML Browser allows you to simulate WAP browsing by viewing WML (Wireless Markup Language) pages in Mozilla, SeaMonkey or Mozilla Firefox. Unfortunately, WBMP (Wireless Bitmap) images are not supported.

Bonus!

firefox-wallpaper

Yesterday, I found this very cool Firefox wallpaper. I hope you guys like it :) Download it from here.

Top 5 Torrent Clients

My friends download a lot using torrents. And that’s why I list of fast ‘n’ speedy torrent clients. Here’s a list of top 5 clients I have found interesting, and would like to share it with you guys! I hope you’ll enjoy reading my review on them.

µTorrent:

µTorrent is most known and most used BitTorrent client. The reason behind its popularity is its light weight easy to use functions incredibly the setup file is only 215kb.
Look wise its not that cool its simple yet easy to navigate and useful, The user interface is the simple 2-pane view that most BitTorrent clients have, with in the top half the list of torrents, and in the bottom half the torrent’s details and statistics. It has ability to draw transfer statistics graph and country flag as information next to user’s you are downloading from in peers tab as well as all the tracker information you’ll ever need.
The sheduler feature is quite simple here which let you shedule your bandwidth (upload and download) depending on the time of the day or you can disable transfers on some specific time, and auto shutdown menu let you hibernate, standby, shutdown or reboot after downloads ends. pretty easy and straight forward as it sounds.
One of its another good feature is called Speed Guide which comes at the first place you install it, it let you configure all your connection and let you choose type of your connection to optimize transfer speed as per your connection specs, and test your port if it is forwarding properly, someinternet service providers limit torrent speeds so Speed Guide let you encrypt your torrent traffic for higher speeds, at the end you can run speed test right from the speed guidepanel to see what transfer speeds you are having.
Latest version also support skinning which previous versions lack, you can add your own language or edit the previous one to your needs, in my personal opinion users with low end machines should use utorrent because it take a few kb of user memory.

Azureus:

Azureus is a java based BitTorrent client these days it is well known and many downloaders are using it. Azureus is known because of its advanced & vast features but the main drawback is its memory usage it takes upto 70-80mb of physical memory which is suppose to be more than enough for a torrent client, the setup file is huge compared to others its 7.7mb
This BitTorrent client is recommended for anyone above beginer because interface is a little confusing you are welcomed with 3 tabs Dashboard, Vuze, Library and unless like other 3 or 2 panes list of files statistics and vise versa at the first sight it will more look like a p2p client however i dont think what vuze is doing in a torrent client but you cant find quite good videos there ;) Dashboard let you see your daily activity.
Azureus have a unique feature too with it you can choose different proxies for Tracker Communications and Peer Communications this feature is so useful for the people whom ISP’s block torrents, it let you encrypt traffic too and all the other options are too vast and some of them may be useless for a normal user. you have to turn on advance feature to see various configurations in options.

Additional content: if Azureus is taking more than 80mb of user memory then check if you have broken binary, update to latest java version.

BitComet:

BitComet is another unique and usable BitTorrent client, its not only torrent downloader it has many more advance features as well, Graphically it is better than utorrent its interface is more user friendly a lot of features on board nothing hidden or too complicated. it has categories in left pane which let you manage your downloads as easy as it can be.

Most unique feature of BitComet is its integration to firefox and IE i was amazed to see that i can download normal http data with one click from firefox right click menu, it download any http data and then automatically seed it. another good thing is drop box which appears anywhere on screen you want, it lets you easily reach program features while bitcomet is minimized.

Now this is the feature that made me so happy BitComet lets you search and download .torrent files rite from one of its pane and there are many site listed the directory is very big you can find almost anything without opening your browser and manually download .torrent file.

Additional content: you can increase your download speed even more by using BitCommet Download Accelerator Plugin 4.4.3

BitSpirit:

BitSpirit is quite new in this business LanSpirit is powering it, it is one cute looking easy on eyes BitTorrent client which comes with many simple features.

You are welcomed with complete information about your system free harddisk space, your operating system version and NAT Traversal status etc etc a patch comes integrated with setup which is XP SP2 TCP/IP limit otherwise some of you have to patch your system manually, it comes with torrent builder it helps you build your own .torrent files and publish it to share files, you can take benefit from one of its feature P2P communication you can chat with other seeders and leechers. you can preview your media files while downloading as well. A bar that appears on the screen while program is minimized that shows upload and download rate and other information.

BitTornado:

BitTornado is another BitTorrent client that help downloading via torrents but this torrent client is somehow change than other clients discussed on this page, this is more of ‘point and download’ client no glossy buttons so far.

You open up the software it directly ask which .torrent file to download by popping up file select window after selecting file or files another window opens up which ask you where to save downloaded stuff. Yey downloading starts here this is simple :)

By clicking advance button you can see traffic, details show you tracker information and package contents, there are settings to choose from various connection types for optimum speed, you can set upload and download speed as well, preferences are too easy to understand, Data Encryption available thats all :D

They are all just little popups comes up when you need them main downloader is 1/4th of your total screen, there is no Que support bad eh, even so so simple this is a very strong and stable BitTorrent client & easy to use.

RapidShare Happy Hours Detector

RapidShare Logo

Here’s something that all free RapidShare users will like. While browsing an underground forum yesterday, I found a very nice application that notifies us whenever RapidShare Happy Hours are enabled.

As a free user, you all must have noticed that RapidShare is again experimenting with Happy Hours. In happy hours, when ever RapidShare fees like their servers have enough spare bandwidth, they disable all the download tickets and captchas and makes it easier for free users to download. You can even use different free tools and downloaders to download files off RapidShare at that time.

The application below is called RapidShare HappyHour-Checker.

RapidShare Happy Hours - Checker

You can download this application from http://rapidshare.com/files/112947397/RSHappyHourChecker.zip

. This is another software called HappyCat and is developed by 20lives and Perrin and the latest version is 1.0.1.

Find All The Installed Windows Updates

While surfing the web, I found a very interesting utility that can list all the Windows updates installed on your system. I’m always interested in such small applications as they could come in handy anytime!

Moving on back to the application, winupdateslist can run from any location on your drive. It neatly displays all the Windows updates (hotfixes, service packs, individual updates) in a table and shows information about the name of the update, its description, and the date that update has been installed. You can also find out that which user installed the updates.

A click on the updates opens a browser window the Knowledgebase article of that specific update from microsoft. Isn’t that sweet? :P

windows-update
(Click on the image to enlarge)

There’s a little compatibility issue. This useful, handy application works on windows98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. On Windows 98/ME, some columns are not displayed, because the related inforamtion not stored in the Registry as in Windows 2000/XP. And I feel sorry for vista users, as this WinUpdatesList does not run on Vista.

Download:

You can download it as a zip file or as a self-install executable.
